Oil of Oregano General Information

The oil of oregano is a completely natural product, derived from the oregano plant that can be found in abudance in the Mediteranean countries and especially in Greece and Italy. There are many variants of Oregano and they are all classified under the Lamiaceae family (mint family). Oregano as a plant is very aromatic and the its dried leaves have even stronger aroma. As it was mentioned above it is found in abudance in the Mediteranean and has become one of the most common ingredients of the Mediteranean diet and cuisine. However besides its culinary use it has been shown that it possess some important health properties.

Oregano oil is an extract of the oregano leaves and flowering tops. Usually a number of different variants of the oregano species are used to produce oregano oil. Oregano oil exerts several health benefits that have been described even in ancient texts. The most important positive health effects of oregano is that it has antioxidant and antibiotic properties. The same can be said for others herb oils like for example basil oil but from various studies it has been shown that the oil of oregano has the most effective antibacterial activity.
